Ballin’ on a Budget: Tips for the Staples (Food, Fitness, & Style)

Ballin’ on a Budget: Tips for the Staples (Food, Fitness, & Style)

Happy Hump Day!

As you know, I’ve been on a MAJOR budget lately but the last thing I want, is that to stop me from living my life and doing things (or buying things) that make me happy and healthy! Being a small business owner, while working multiple part-time jobs, leaves little to no “extra” spending money. When it comes to spending money, there are a few things I’ll invest in. Food is absolutely number one. Food is medicine to me. I honestly can’t remember the last time I’ve had to pay for a pharmaceutical. Wholesome, healthy food has been my save and grace and for that reason, I’m ALWAYS willing to spend an extra dollar or two. As for fitness, that’s probably tied with food. Again, I feel my BEST when I get a good sweat in, surround myself with a positive fitness community, and treat my body well! Lastly, I threw style in here because that’s always been a fun passion of mine. I feel the clothes I wear are a representation of who I am. I consider myself a pretty creative individual and my clothes allow me to express my inner fashionista (lol, too far?)

Let’s start with FOOD. How to eat healthy on a small budget.

I’ll be honest, I don’t always follow my own advice. The convenience of having a Whole Foods within walking distance can be far too tempting most times.

  • A lot of “chain” grocery stores now carry your everyday healthy products at a much cheaper price. I’m a huge fan of shopping at Wegmans. Their organic produce selection is top-notch. They have great bulk food options (and prices). Trader Joes is another one that has really low prices for their produce and other products.

Thrive Market. This one I accidentally bought the membership a year ago, BUT I will say, it HAS been worth it. When you stock up and spend more than $49 on groceries, you get free shipping. Not to mention, they always are doing free product giveaways with your order. See this picture on the left, that rosewater came free! Last time, I got two cartons of Califia Farms products. They offer these deals while supplies last. PLUS almost all of their products are discounted (trust me, I’ve checked and compared!) I love using Thrive when I’m running low on all of the expensive oils, dry goods, nuts, superfoods, etc.
– Buy from the BULK FOOD SECTION! A huge part of our diet is nuts, grains, dried fruits, almond butter, and so on. The bulk food section at any store tends to always be cheaper than if you were to buy it pre-packaged.
– Get yourself a WholeFoods Whole Body Benefits Card at customer service. Gets you 20% off supplements!
– Always keep an eye out for Whole Foods sales. Trust me, a lot of my fave products like Health-Ade Kombucha, Simple Mills, Purely Elizabeth, Hilary’s Eat Well, etc. goes on sale!
– Scroll through your fave instagramers and you can ALWAYS find a discount code for some of your favorite products! PS – I’ve added in some of my discount codes at the bottom of this post!
– Speaking of Kombucha, did you know that anytime you buy a case (of anything) at Whole Foods, you get 10% off! Sometimes the cashiers don’t even realize this, so make sure you ask.

Now moving on to fitness…

If you know me, I’ve joked that I’m a serial fitness dater (not sure if that even makes sense…) But what I’m trying to get at is that I…

1) LOVE switching up my workouts (which is actually really good for your body) and…
2) I’m always on the hunt for “free trials”, “membership deal sign-ups”, “student discounts” (sry I know this is bad but I still use my student ID everywhere…it doesn’t have an expiration date!), 30 days for $30 unlimited, and so on. The deals go on. ESPECIALLY if you’re living in a college city. SO keep an eye out for those.
* For example, did you know you get a 1-week free trial with CorePower Yoga?
– Create your own work-out space at home! I did this for almost a year after I quit my “luxury” gym (spending far too much money on a monthly basis). I had a yoga mat, simple weights, and did a lot of HIIT. Kayla Itsines (like every other girl haha) was one of the programs I followed. Youtube and even the fitness instagram world can both be great resources.
– I also switched up my workouts with runs and yoga. I will admit, I recently found an AWESOME gym deal ($25 a month) and I felt now was a good time to jump on that since we’re entering into the brutal seasons of Boston (i.e. the dreaded Winter months). The snow and cold makes running outside not fun and certainly doesn’t help with any of my fitness motivation.
– ALWAYS search groupon or gilt city before paying for any studio. Guarantee there will be some deal out there.
– You can also join ClassPass and pay a CRAZY cheap price ($19 if you’re a new member) for your first month. I’ll be honest, I cancelled after 🙂 Though I love the idea of it…I couldn’t get myself to pay the regular monthly price after your trial ends.
– Search on your cities event page for free fitness classes!
– Go to community/donation-based yoga classes.

And finally…STYLE!

I will admit, I was a HUGE spender when it came to clothes. Especially when I had a pretty nice income. I never dropped money on super pricey designers but I definitely regularly shopped at Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and Free People. Obviously times have changed and I can’t afford to do that anymore. LUCKILY, I have a lot of clothes in my closet that I no longer where and I’ve found a FAB way to cheat the system. Whenever I’m getting an itch to shop or update my fall wardrobe for example, I’ll search through my closet and drawers for pieces that are in season (this is key because most trendy thrift stores won’t accept out of season clothing). I’ll then search through any hats, shoes, jewelry, purses, jackets, etc. to see if there’s been anything I haven’t touched in the past year (or sometimes even 6 months if I’m feeling frisky).

Oversized jackets never go out of style in my book // found @ Buffalo Exchange
Loving these pieces from Buffalo Exchange. Pair a slingy dress w/ a sparkly see-through long sleeve (and pearls!) – Perfect for the Holidays!

I then march my giant bag of clothing to my FAVE thrift store, Buffalo Exchange , vintage and used clothing. (located in Allston on Harvard St. for my local friends). PS there are Buffulo Exchange stores all over the US. I found one in Queens, NY and spotted one while in Denver, CO. They are extremely picky with the clothes they accept, so make sure it’s in style, trendy, in pretty good condition, and hipster(y) is always a plus. Though it can be annoying as the seller when they send back nearly half of what you brought in, it’s also great because you know that you’re going to find the racks are all stocked with clothes, shoes, and accessories that are in style and SUPER cheap (I’m talking almost everything under $20)! They’ll offer you either a store credit or cash (though the cash ends up being like half of what you’d get with store credit), so I always keep the store credit! I then go shop, pick up a few staple fall items, and then end up having a $0 balance thanks to the clothes that I brought in and were accepted! Also, always check the quality of the clothing, if you find any small tears or stains, they’ll discount it even more, usually like 30-50% off.

Get yourself a pair of fun loafers for Fall // found brand new (Zara) @ Buffalo Exchange
…and a pair of funky wedges to go with pants & an oversized sweater // again found @ B.E.

This is my NUMBER 1 tip to always keeping fresh new items in your closet without spending a dime! Happy shopping ladies (and men)!!

So there ya have it friends, my personal tips to BALLLLLLIN’ on a budget 😉

10 of my Top Current Obsessions

10 of my Top Current Obsessions

For those of you who follow my instagram @eatrunandallinbetween on a daily basis, you probably have a good sense of what my current obsessions are at the moment. Let’s be honest, we all fall into these obsessive traps from time to time. Whether you’re scrolling through instagram, facebook, or pinterest, there’s always some new food, fashion, technology, or fitness must-have that’s trending at the time. And if you’re like me, you easily become convinced that this is the NEXT BIG THING that will somehow work a miracle on you. I like to tell myself I’m not that gullible, but rather, curious and open-minded (HA …who am I kidding)!

Cheers to following trends, fads, and obsessions! Here are mine at the moment – P.S. these are DEFinitely not an exhaustive list.

1.) We’ll start with a three in one! Chokers, Off-the-shoulder tops, & Kombucha!
img_9595
Yes, like every other basic girl, I have an obsession over chokers & off-the-shoulder tops. However, what’s more important is KOMBUCHA and I’ll give the quick & dirty summary of why you should be drinking this everyday! Kombucha is fermented tea and once fully fermented, kombucha becomes carbonated and contains vinegar, b-vitamins, enzymes, probiotics and a high concentration of acid that helps to aid good gut-health, digestion, reduced joint pain, cleansing & detoxification…and so much more!

2.) Looking for a crunchy salad topping or the perfect snack to-go as you’re running out the door? These crispy chickpea bites are where it’s at!
fullsizerender-10
Check out some of my most recent, favorite ways to use these in daily recipes.

3.) Next on the list, I figured I’d share these adorable Marshall’s finds with you! I totally believe that items like this make it more exciting to be in the kitchen and actually give you motivation to want to cook! Homegoods, TJ Maxx, and Marshall’s are always a good place to start!
fullsizerender-12

4.) Anyone else obsessed with Hilary’s Eat Well burgers?! I’ll be honest, during the week, all I want for dinner is something quick, easy, and healthy. After my commute and a day at work, I’m simply just hangry! Thankfully items like these come in handy …I love throwing a veggie burger in the oven, with a slice of ezekiel avocado toast & some sweet potato fries on the side for dinner. So easy and tastes gr8!!
fullsizerender-13

5.) LOVE these face masks – I swear my skin has been glowing since paying more attention to face masks & skin care. Definitely give these a shot!
fullsizerender-14

6.) My coffee of choice? Jim’s organic coffee all the way – all day, everyday. They truly make an effort to ensure all of their coffee is 100% certified organic by the USDA and Oregon Tilth, which means grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers – and that they’re non-GMO!
fullsizerender-9

7.) Mary’s Gone Crackers are seriously my new favorite snacking item! Dipping these tasty crackers in hummus is all I need in life. Not to mention, they’re entirely gluten-free, organic, non-GMO, vegan …and so on!
fullsizerender-8

8.) I love that there are so many variations of “pasta” out there now – brown rice, garbanzo bean, and Tolerant’s black bean or red lentil pasta! Give it a try and substitute your everyday pasta for one of these – they’re loaded with protein and are so nutritious for you!
fullsizerender-7

9.) In addition to the Rich Roll podcast which I religiously listen to, I also dabble in GirlBoss radio. I love that Sophia (founder of Nasty Gal) interviews driven, ambitious, and self-made women across various industries. Her book is a great tale of her own story and how she literally started from nothing and created a fashion empire. If you need any inspiration or helpful tips – give this book a read!
fullsizerender-15

10.) Tis the season for all fall flavors! My current tea obsession has to be this tasty combo by the one and only, Trader Joe’s. I’ll usually add a splash of almond milk or honey and enjoy this before bed.
fullsizerender-11

That’s all for now! More new finds and obsessions to come ….I promise 😉

Beach Inspired DIY Projects

Beach Inspired DIY Projects

I’d love to take credit for the inspiration that you’ll see in the below picture, however, shamelessly, I got all of these wonderful ideas through pinterest. THANK GOD FOR PINTEREST AM I RIGHT?? What you’ll need:
Screen Shot 2015-05-17 at 3.58.11 PM
– 1 Wooden board with either a mount or a rope to hang
– Mason Jars
– Old Fashion Tall Soda Jars
– A variety of paint brushes – Small, Medium, AND Large
– Acrylic Paint (this is the type of paint that works best on any surface; wood, glass, etc. Michaels has a HUGE selection of colors, so make sure to keep your eyes pealed) >> We used the “FolkArt” brand; multi-surface (turquoise, aqua, mandarin orange, White, Gold, & Silver)
– Plain Wooden Letters (Again, Craft stores like Michaels or AC Moore carry A TON of these wooden letters in different styles, so make sure to look around for the right one!) >>> Also, we chose to use our initials; but you can also create words to hang or display somewhere around the house. For example; we’re thinking of doing “GIN” in all gold to put above the bar cart OR you can spell SURF or BEACH… you get the idea!

IMG_1926

*For the mason jars and soda cars, I was inspired by this image I found on pinterest; then I just went for it and did my own variations of the bohemian design. These mason jars and soda cans can be SO versatile – Candle holders, Vases, pencil holder, tooth brush holder, kitchen glasses, and more!

*For the wooden board, we took a thick brush and painted it white first, then let it dry. Next, we stenciled “BEACH” in a pencil, then painted over it in aqua and outlined it in the orange all with thinner brushes.

IMG_1927

*For the letters, we each did our own design using variations of the paint colors. Then we kept the & a solid Gold to balance out the patterns.

The best part is that now that we finished this project for just $25 each, we have all of this paint left over to use for more decorations once we actually make the move to our apartment …will likely end up getting more mason jars because I just love that look!

Make sure to follow me on Pinterest & my “DIY“; “Workin Gal in the Real World“; and “Comfy Heaven” for all my apartment finds!

Festival Trends I’ve been Loving Lately

Festival Trends I’ve been Loving Lately

In light of festival season being in full swing now and with the summer quickly approaching, I wanted to share with y’all festival trends I’ve been loving lately! Last year, I had the opportunity to experience one of the most amazing 3 days of my life in Las Vegas for Electric Daisy Carnival. As ridiculous as it sounds, it was honestly a life changing experience and something that will be sure to go down in the books. We actually loved it so much, that we reasoned dropping another grand to make our way out to Vegas for round 2 in June. Vegas in itself is a beast of its own. Now picture 500,000 people flying in from around the world for one ridiculous week in June full of DJ’s 24/7, pool parties, crazy outfits, good vibes, warm weather, and enough dancing to put you out of commission for a whole week.

This festival is truly unlike any other. Now, one thing to note is that EDC festival style is VERY different than Coachella festival style for example. That being said, I’ll share some trends that could honestly swing any way. See below for my top picks!

First, here are my top 3 picks for Best Overall “Festival Shop”:

In with the new obsessions out with the old

In with the new obsessions out with the old

Haven’t posted one of these in while…so what have I been into lately?

Jawbone/FitBit – Thanks to my wonderful friends, I got hooked to a jaw bone (or for some, you may be loyal to the fitbit). We spent one night out in Baltimore, dancing and what not. Checked her fitbit the next morning and saw that we had hit about 1,500 steps in just 15 minutes..WHAT WHAT?! As you could imagine, I came home from that weekend and purchased a jawbone the following day. You could say I’m a bit impulsive… BUT this is seriously a GREAT tool, especially those that work a normal 8-5 day job. I’m lucky enough to have an ergonomic, stand up desk, so I’m not sitting all day – but it definitely helps to remind when I need to get my walks in.

images

Maybelline Baby Lips – I realize these have been around for quite a while now and I actually used to always have 1 or 2 colors on me at a time. For some silly reason, I stopped buying them. Just recently, I got back into these wonderful chapsticks and haven’t regretted one purchase. They’re cheap, they have great color options, they smell (and taste good hehe), and they leave your lips looking baby soft!

CheapChicas-Daily-Deal-Maybelline-Baby-Lips1

My iPhone 6 – I swear I’m never that person that brags about their technology, etc. because up until just a few weeks ago, I was living in the stone ages with an iphone 4. I know CRAZY!!! How could I have possibly lived on JUST an iphone 4?!?!? LOL…clearly I’m being sarcastic here. But, now that I’ve finally upgraded to this giant device they call a phone, I’m surprisingly pleased with the iphone 6! To be honest, when I first held this brick in my hand, I wasn’t quite sure how I’d cope without my beautiful little iphone 4. But, I’m here to tell you, that I’ve adapted to the size! Wahoo!!

iPhone_6_PLUS_preview_MG_1875

Fingerless Gloves – Well, let’s be honest. I obviously like these because I look like a bad ass CHICK. And the other reason why I love these things is that I can actually still function with them on. I can wear them and text at the same time. I can EVEN where them in my office when it’s freezing. I can wear them going to the bathroom…TMI? Yep, I’ve been that lazy (and cold…what is up with this -10 degree wind chill Boston??) to take my jacket and gloves off. Needless to say, I’m obsessed with my gloves and you should all go buy a pair. May I suggest Urban Outfitters? PLEASE CAUTION – your hands will freeze if you plan on wearing these while scraping snow/ice off your car. I learned this the hard way…

34128876_001_a

Burt’s Bees Hand Salve – This is your hands best friend in the winter. Seriously, you should have seen how cracked out my hands were before using this. However, one thing I will warn you on is that it leaves your hands with a very greasy, rather uncomfortable feeling. I do not suggest wearing this before a meeting with MR./MRS. BOSS MAN/WOMAN where you may or may not be shaking their hand.
Glossybox-Japan-September-2012-Burts-Bees-Hand-Salve

Hot Yoga – I received a gift certificate for 10 yoga classes for Christmas that I’ve definitely been taking advantage of. I’ll begin by stating that I actually had no idea that come the first class, 6 AM in the morning, I’d be attending a hot yoga class. However, as I walked into the studio, dreary and in a sluggish state, the instant that warmth and the calming music hit me, I felt a feeling of peace and gratification overwhelm me. YES, I realize this sounds SO incredibly cliche, but I’m telling you, for a high-strung, type A person like myself, it’s hard to find that feeling of simplicity on a day-to-day basis. After, my first class, you can say I was hooked.
HotYogaFINAL

Oxford Platforms – These shoes were a purchase from Forever 21, putting a dent of $25 dollars into my wallet. Not to bad, right? Well, this purchase was worth it! These shoes are great for many reasons, they add 1.5 inches to my whopping 5’2″ frame, they are just like comfortable flats, but with a little elevation, which leads into my third and final reason, they’re great for work! School girl Chic and comfortable…what’s not to love about these?

In with the New Obsessions, Out with the Old

In with the New Obsessions, Out with the Old

Hey Friends! It’s been a while since I’ve written my last blog post AND updated you on my latest obsessions…so here ya have it!

Knee High Socks and Plaid A-Line Skirt: I’ve been obsessed with this look lately for the fall. A pair of knee highs, some strappy heels, a plaid skirt, collared shirt, blazer and a chunky necklace is the perfect go-to for work! Then when you’re looking for a more casual look – dress it down with knee highs, a pair of converses, plaid skirt and white t-shirt! American Apparel has been killing the plaid skirt game and knee highs so go check em out!
edgy high skirt

Dillon Francis – Well recently his newest album just came out: Money Sucks, Friends Rule and it’s fricken awesome. Plus, if you haven’t already GO follow him on every social media forum. He literally can make you laugh at your unhappiest point. Instagram, twitter, facebook, and even his website has an archive of his videos including: Becky, DJ Hansel, DJ Rich as Fuck, and so on. So go do yourself a favor and listen to his CD, buy tickets for his tour and watch every Dillon Francis video he’s done. You’re welcome!
dillon
50 Shades of Grey…Nail Polish: Every shade of dark grey will do you justice and you’ll look super fab and chic in your trendy fall nail color! You can’t go wrong with clashing an outfit, it’s perfect for work AND a night out on the town.
grey nails

Pure Barre: So I’ve done a few barre classes before in the past year, but this is the first Barre class that I’ve REALLY become obsessed with. For those who don’t know Barre – it’s a ballet inspired fitness class. Now before you go making any prior judgments, I’m quite possibly the least coordinated person (hence why I choose running as my sport…) but that doesn’t mean you can’t do this class! This class seriously leaves you with AMAZING results as “Burns, Tones, and Lifts”. I’ve been doing this for a little more than 2 weeks now and I’ve already felt better in my body and am loving the class. Plus, they play upbeat EDM the entire class so you could say I’m a little bias : ) The best part is that this chain is nation-wide so I can find a local studio when I’m back home on the east coast!
barre
Brussel Sprouts, Butternut Squash, Cranberries, and Dijon Vinaigrette: This is 100% my FAVORITE fall dish. I’m slightly obsessed with this combo. I first tried it at Lyfe Kitchen and have been obsessed since then. So go try out this recipe for your Thanksgiving contribution and blow your taste buds away!
lyfe

Leg Warmers: Yes, I’m bringing leg warmers back. You could say I’m slightly inspired by my recent Barre classes. But, I completely forgot how comfy and cozy these things are! I recently just bought a pair from Lululemon and wear them all the time! Pair them with some leggings, converses, a comfy sweater and you’re could go to!
leg warmers

San Franola Granola: I recently just gave this granola a try and am absolutely impressed with it! It has 10 grams of protein, 160 calories for 1/2 cup (far less than normal granola), only 5 grams of sugar and a lot of fiber! I tried the Cinnamon Almond which was awesome! But they also have: California Raisin, Lemon Zest, Ginger Snap and Toasted Chia! Plus, I love supporting a local health brand. Go San Francisco!

That my friends, is a list of my current obsessions! Stay tuned for my next post!

In with the New Obsessions and Out with Old

In with the New Obsessions and Out with Old

It’s now September and tear, tear – the summer is coming to an end. Well, at least that would be true if I was still on the east coast, but shockingly, it’s still 80’s here in Sunny California on a daily basis! Hey – I’m not complaining…although I could use a bit of some cool breeze every now and then.

Anyway, I’d rather not jinx anything and just get to my point. I love the changing of seasons. It means in with the new and out with the old. It means trading in your crop tops for big sweaters and letting go of your blonde, sun-infused highlights for a darker look. It also means (my least favorite part) giving up that glowing summer tan.

As my way of saying “Welcome Fall”, I’d like to introduce you to my new section:

In with the New Obsessions and Out with the Old – where I will give you a rundown of my new obsessions’ for the week and the ones that I’ve moved on from. For those of you who know me well, I don’t really care what people think. So if I’m newly obsessed with something that was trendy a month ago – get over it! And I mean that in the nicest way possible. Second thing you should probably know about me, I sometimes pick up new hobbies or become obsessed with something one day and then completely move on from it the next. So, just bear with me – I tend to be impulsive when it comes to things like that 🙂

Now, what have I been obsessed with lately?

Flash Tattoo’s – I know. I’m totally late on the band wagon. BUT thankfully, Summer is not exactly over here in California, Which therefore gives me an excuse to get tatted up all over my bodddd. I love this gold and metallic look on the hands, wrists, ankles, back, anywhere! It’s so fun and instantly chic’s your outfit up.
flasht tat

Acai Bowls – Well, because they are 1000x’s more amazing than the best parfait you’ve ever had – yes, I realize that is a risky statement – but trust me, that’s saying A LOT. I mean Acai Bowls are the most amazing purple deliciousness that has been created, topped with all of your favorite health-food toppings…what is there not to love??
acai

Fresh White Sneakers – Again, this trend has been around FOREVER thanks to chucks. But lately, the “no-white” after Labor Day hasn’t stopped me. I’ve been allllll about my clean new white Vans. They’re fun and dress down a casual/fancy outfit, which I love for work!
2014-spring-shoe-white-sneakers-1

Choker Necklaces – THANK YOU to Brandy Melville (and Kylie Jenner) for bringing back my favorite childhood accessory – the Choker Necklace. I feel so in touch with my inner rebellious, bad-ass self.
brandy

Festivals – Yes, I realize this is VERY vague. Because there are no limits to what kind of festivals I wouldn’t attend. Music = number 1 for sure. Food = definitely close to number 1, but number 2 will do. Drinking/Food = Well, let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a DAGE? Case in point – I love festivals – be it an arts, food, and wine festival (yes, the bar area LOVES these), an edm festival, a Lululemon Yoga festival, and OctoberFEST, a Greek Festival, a Food Truck Festival, etc. – the list could go on and I am forever thankful for this.
Coachella-2013-Live-Stream-Channel-1

Cookies and Cream Quest Bar – First let me start off my saying that this particular flavor happened to come out JUST A FEW DAYS after I decided to go Vegan. This obviously upset me because I love oreos and I loved quest bars – but sadly, the whey protein in there meant I could no longer eat them as a Vegan. You can imagine my excitement in trying these once I moved away from my Veganism – pure joy I tell you! The chunks of oreo goodness are purely amazing.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Socks – Who knew socks could be so multi-functional?? Also, how can you not be obsessed with fun socks when you find yourself immersed in a store full of JUST socks? Silly socks, chic socks, knee socks, dress socks, and oh, there’s more. Whether it’s paring fancy socks with heels or rocking your best pair of funky ankle socks with your white kicks…socks rock and will forever be your best friend when it comes to fighting off those blisters…….
socks

Road Trips – I don’t care where you are, who you are with (alone, with family, friends, a significant other) just do it! Go somewhere completely new, be spontaneous, don’t have a set schedule. It’s always best to just wing your road trip, seek new adventures, make some friends and take in whatever beautiful scenery may be surrounding you. Oh and take advantage of the last of the warm weather – I don’t suggest road-tripping in snow…trust me, it’s no bueno.

Looks of the Week

Looks of the Week

Hey Everyone! As you most of you may have noticed, whether through Instagram or my blog, I’ve started posting my outfits of the day for you all to see! I know at least for myself, I often struggle with what I want to wear to work in the morning. I can spend anywhere from 2 minutes to 20 minutes picking out an outfit in the AM.

Now, I know what some of you are thinking, “Why don’t you choose an outfit the night before to save time?” Trust me, it’s not like I haven’t tried this once before! Yes, this is great, it saves you some time and maybe you’re brain is feeling creative at 9:30/10PM at night. That is fabulous if this works for you, however this just does not work the same for me! I used to pick out my outfits the night before, but more recently I’ve picked my entire outfit out in the morning solely because more often than none, my mood does a total 360 from the night before.

So, I may have been inspired to wear some retro preppy outfit at 10 last night, but wake up that morning feeling office chic. Now, tell me, if you’re in the mood for pizza earlier in the day, yet decide on your drive home you want sushi, you are 100% going to get sushi. I can’t think of anything worse than eating something when your craving something entirely different. So, case in point my friends, you have to go with your cravings! Whether it’s that boyfriend blazer you need to sport or the Italian meatballs you need devour, don’t go unhappy! With that, I welcome you to my closet….

When Fashion Meets the Office

When Fashion Meets the Office

Happy Monday Everyone! So recently, right before Christmas, I took the initiative to begin posting my outfits for work every day! I’ve had a few people here and there throw that suggestion out there, so why not start it up now?! Plus, I too struggle/struggled with what to wear to work every day! And it’s funny, because over a year ago, I had accepted a post-college job position with a large retail company, where I would have had to wear a red shirt and khakis every day (I’m assuming you all have a fairly good idea as to the store now…). Anyway, I had interned there my summer going into Senior year and I really loved the job itself! It was so hands on and really gave me amazing experience and the opportunity to act as a leader, but let me tell you, a HUGE factor I considered when deciding to go with another job was part of the work attire.

I know this sounds crazy, but fashion has always been something I’ve been passionate about. I always saw myself as a trendy business woman, just like the Devil Wears Prada! Now, I don’t consider myself to be the most fashionable, trend-setting individual, however, I love my style and I feel it best expresses who I am. So, case in point, I went with the corporate job and am able to flexibly wear business casual attire to work WITH the AWESOME addition of casual Friday.

For those of you who can relate, I feel that what you wear says a lot about you and even though this probably shouldn’t be the case, what you wear is often 80-90% of someone’s first impression of you. That person will likely make a judgment about you within 5 seconds of meeting you based on your presentation. Of course, I’m not saying you should care what people think about you, because I certainly don’t, but maybe consider wearing something that reflects what’s so great and unique about you…stand out from the crowd! As one more piece of advice, I personally and 100% feel that your confidence and your own personal happiness highly gravitates off of how you come dressed to work every day. So take the time to find a style that best mirrors you as an individual and learn to LOVE and OWN that look!

My Favorite Running Essentials!

My Favorite Running Essentials!

Sorry everyone for not posting to much lately, but like I said I was in the middle of an extremely BUSY busy week! However, I’m SUPER happy to announce that my hell week is finally OVERRRR! Anyway, I was recently inspired (and figured it was about time) to post about some of my favorite running essentials that I own and utilize pretty much every day! As far as the brands go that I’ve pictured on my post, I’m not exactly loyal to any one brand, I just wear what looks cute, fits the best, and is most realistic/comfortable to run in!

The first, and what I feel are most important, are the running “extras” and PT associated items that I own and keep in my dorm room!

photo (17)

What’s Here? — If you look in the side left corner, that there is a calf roller! This is actually one of my roomies, but it’s a great tool to use for massaging your calves. I wouldn’t recommend using this before a workout as it tends to make your calves sore from the pressure of rolling them out. However, it’s an extremely useful resource for post-workout and runs if you’re finding your calves are feeling tight and achy! The next resource is the yoga mat! A pretty obvious one here, but as I’ve talked about in a past post on Yoga, this is really a performance enhancing exercise to help out runners and anyone for that matter! Moving on to the center is my stability ball! This is a great PT (physical therapy) tool if your motivated to do the “extra, mechanical” work that comes with running. This ball is great for working on and improving your core, legs, and glutes! Personally for me, I’ve had years of trouble with my form due to the lack of strength in my glutes. So recently I’ve really been trying to improve my strength there by doing bridge ups on the stability ball. For those of you who are not familiar with this exercise, here’s a preview of the ‘stability ball glute bridges‘ I found on youtube. The next tool is one of my favorites and is always highly recommended by our coach to utilize everyday and that is the Foam Roller! If your feeling tight, achy, beat up, sore, whatever it may be…use the foam roller to massage your quads, hamstrings, calves, glutes, lower back, and upper shoulders! Using a foam roller is quite similar and not to mention (CHEAPER!) than getting a deep tissue massage. However, the key to the foam roller is to go VERY slowly along each part of your muscle and repeat it several times! The last essential item I use as part of my PT and recovery process are compression sleeves! Now, I’ve had these for quite a while, so it’s probably time to get a new pair as they loose the “tight fitting” effect after wearing and washing them often. Anyway, the brand I use is Zensah and you can get them in many colors! Compression sleeves are great to wear AFTER or BEFORE running (not during as they cut off your blood circulation). However, they are great for those who may be experiencing shin splints (or would like to avoid them) as they reduce inflammation and prevent injury! I highly recommend these to runners with higher mileage and consistent running routines!

Now that I got the nitty gritty stuff out of the way, on to the fun stuff! Clothing attire, shoes, and accessories! First off, i’ll introduce my shoe essentials as those are the most important part to running 😉
photo (16)
So these are currently the shoes I switch in and out of everyday! The purple nike free’s you see are brand new and they are version 5.0! The one thing to note is that I DON’T wear these running EVER and I really don’t recommend anyone to as they add extra pressure and stress on your calves and aren’t exactly fitted with the extra cushioning for runners who are totaling high mileage weeks! As you can tell, I own two pairs of nike frees, the black ones with the bright blue detailing are an older version (I’m actually not sure what version, but they’re from 2010)! I wear the nike frees when I’m just walking around/hanging out or I wear them to the gym for lifting OR cross training (i.e. the elliptical or the bike). My next two shoes are the same style running shoes I’ve been wearing since the beginning of my college career. They are the Brooks Adrenalines and are perfect for those runners that need the added support and cushioning. These are especially helpful to those who tend to be more injury prone like myself (I’ve experienced a stress fracture back in high-school as well as minor injuries along the way) and we certainly want to avoid that! I also like to switch off every other day with my brooks just to switch it up! Also, an important tip is to make sure you buy new running shoes after you’ve logged between 250-350 miles, especially if you want to avoid injuries!!

Now, moving on to the running clothes I LOVE!
photo (14)
To begin, I’ll start with the sports bras in the left corner of the above picture. The two brands I wear are Champion (I purchase these from Target), as they come in SO many fun colors! I also love the Nike dry fit sports bra as they too come in fun pictures and are very tight fitting and supportive (great for the hot summers when you want to run in just a sports bra)! Moving on to the center of the picture, it’s quite obvious I love all Nike Spandex, specifically the nike pro shorts! I have more colors of where those came from ^^ but these were the top 3 favorite colors! These are literally the best shorts, especially if your doing speed workouts on the track or logging in some long 10-milers! Of course, these aren’t exactly fit for the winter which is why I’ve also pictured the longer, fun-colored, version of the nike pros! The only issue I find with these is that they tend to fall down as the elastic band isn’t very tight on the top. My under armour capri spandex were in the laundry so I couldn’t picture those, however that brings me on to the next apparel option featured by our school sponsor, Under Armour, established right here in Baltimore, Maryland! Aside from the classic Under Armour Spandex (which are great for the cold winter seasons), I also have grown to like the flowy running shorts I’ve pictured. I wear these shorts on gym/lifting days or just on basic/recovery run days! As for shirts, I’m a T-shirt gal seeing as I have an absurd amount of them that I’ve collected over the years from random events and just about every high school/college track meet! So, I don’t exactly see the need to spend the money on running tops…but that’s just me!

Lastly, the two necessary accessories I wear while running…
photo (15)
Yes, you’re eyes are not failing on you, those are indeed ribbons you see me holding. And yes, I am still a girly child at heart and LOVE wearing ribbons while running or working out. Though I wear them for the look, I also tie them over my hair elastic to keep it in place as I have very thick hair and it absolutely drives me crazy when my hair falls out while running! The last thing pictures is my Ironman ‘TIMEX’ triathlon watch! I’ve been using the same brand since high school and I’v only had to cycle through what I BELIEVE to be 3 watches in the past 8 years. I’d say that’s a pretty durable watch for the price you get! These watches run between 40-70$ and have the basic important features that runners look for…the time/date (well, duh), start/stop/reset timer, a button to take splits (really helpful when doing repeats on the track), and there are a few other buttons included…but I don’t really use anything else besides what I mentioned! I’m pretty simple and basic when it comes to my watch!

Hope that helps everyone get a better idea of what I run in and use in my ‘off-time’ while I’m not running! Hoping AND praying that Spring starts kicking into gear soon so I can actually break out my nike pros and get to work on my tan sometime in the near future….!! 🙂

And, be sure to check out my instagram account at @EatRunandAllinBetween …I’m hoping to get to 300 followers by the middle of April and you would all help SO much with that! (You can also follow my instagram online if you haven’t downloaded instagram on your smart phone device. Refer to my side bar on my blog to follow!) Thank you!! 🙂
