As the Notorious B I G once liked to say (and unfortunately, my dentist, Dr. Hersherberger, who used to sing this to me…) “I’m goin, goin back to, back to…CALIIII” Okay, I realize that was about as lame as it could possibly get. Apologies. Anyways…. Hey Everyone! So I have some exciting news to share with you all! I’m currently going to be spending the next 9 months out in California as part of the second rotation of my job. I’m sure you’ve noticed that I’ve been slacking quite a significant amount on my blog and various forms of social media…well, now you know I have a legitimate excuse!
Just to bring you all up to speed on some background details…I’m part of a leadership development rotational program with a large tech-focused company. I just completed my first rotation on the east coast and have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work with a small, start-up-like tech company on the West Coast, buried among the other various tech companies in Silicon Valley. I’m so excited to embark on this new journey and could not be more grateful for this amazing opportunity to work with such a driven and motivated company. Not to mention, the team here is great, which certainly helps to ease out the move!
Though I certainly miss my boyfriend, friends, family, and co-workers on the east coast, I’ve been keeping in mind that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity that doesn’t come around too often. Plus, I kind of get the best of both worlds…I get to dip my feet into a whole new work environment, in a place so foreign to me, then in just 9 months…I’m back to the east coast, an area where I’m comfortable with and have lived my whole life. With that, I will undoubtedly, make the most of my experience here. Now that I’ve finally begun to settle in with work, my apartment, and beginning to adapt to the California lifestyle, I’m excited to share my journey with you all along the way!
Home Sweet Home <3[/caption] There is so much I plan to do, see, and EAT out here…I don’t want to leave any of it out! For those of you who have not had the opportunity to travel out to this part of California, let me just start by telling you that it is BEAUTIFUL. Just a few days ago, I went running during work with some co-workers (FYI this would never be “acceptable” on the east coast…I would be judged right out of the office!) This run was like something I’ve only ever dreamed about (or at least seen through pictures in Runner’s World!) Our office is located amongst gorgeous rolling hills, with cows and horses alongside, mountainous terrains and the shining sun outline the rest of the view. We ran along various trails, passing fellow techy’s running, biking, or walking. It’s just so abnormal and refreshing to see so much activity, passion, and dedication at all hours of the day surrounding me.
Next point…the FOOD. Now granted I came from the suburbia of the Boston area, but the food here actually PROMOTES healthy eating…and they make it taste great to! As I said above, sure big cities on the east coast certainly offer little she-she vegan restaurants and all natural/organic cafes, but it’s just so great to actually see that here, in Suburban like towns. I don’t have to be living in the city to get 5 gourmet salad bars all within in a mile from each other! PLUS, all the fruits and veggies are just so fresh and the taste is very noticeable. OH and how about the close proximity to AVOCADO farms?? At least I know I’ll never, ever be Avocado deprived. Also, coincidentally enough, the conference room’s name directly across from my cube is called “Avogadro” which pretty much sounds like “Avocado” WHICH pretty much means it was meant to be.
Anyhow, before I get to carried away, let me end off by saying that I signed up for a half-marathon NEXT weekend in Santa Cruz with a co-worker. Now, typically, I would NOT have signed for a half on this short of notice…especially seeing as my training has been EXTREMELY minimal. But hey, how could I resist the appeal of BEACHES???? Anyhow, my moto while I’m here is to just go for it…so WHY Not! Santa Cruz half marathon here I come!
More to Come… 🙂
